Art by Laura Brown
Leaning into the sentimental and personal with a goal of making work that feels universal.

I love the things that I make. But I’m in love with the process of making. Even on the sad days, if I can get a single moment of creating in, I’ll feel the benefits many times over. 🧵

. [details for makers] our old clothing cut apart into 1” squares, sewn together into a Kufic script reading “Allah”. A word we said again and again in prayer while wearing the clothing. Maybe writing it this way was more like carving a sculpture- the word was already held within. 📝

All of these pieces are greenware (haven’t been through the kiln) that have been in my garage all winter long. I have doubts about their viability, so I’m reclaiming the clay by submerging them in water. The knitted forms are all fine, so I just have to start that process over again. 🧶

I have some cleaning out to do in my garage studio. Can’t wait to get back to work in this space soon, iA. ❄️
.
[details for makers] knitted porcelain pieces that were in progress and that I’ll be starting over. If you look closely, you can see cracks in the greenware bc I refused to believe that winter was coming and didn’t finish things up like I should have! 📝

2 years of slow stitching. 2020 - 2022. This was a project that kept me company during Covid. 🧵
.
[details for makers] cross stitch of ayatul Kursi using the weave of the linen fabric for the grid. Single ply of sashiko thread- mostly threads leftover from other projects. My sweet friend @crumbsandbirds unlocked this idea for me. Friends who teach us are the best. 📝

Ramadan Mubarak to everyone for whom this month is sacred ✨🌙 ✨
.
I created a small collection of work for Ramadan 2026 - bukhoor jars. I love to burn incense more during the month and wanted something beautiful to burn it in. That’s how this little rabbit hole of exploration opened to me. I love every one of these pieces so dearly. ✨
.
All pieces are currently for sale on my website and I’ll be vending in person at Saj in Canton 11 pm - 3 am Saturday February 21 - Sunday morning! Hope to see you there!

I refuse to understand the value of all my time in terms of dollars and cents. My time is priceless. Yours is too. 🧶

✨ Ramadan bukhoor jars ✨
An idea from last summer. Started in the fall. Finished in the winter. From intention to action to completion. I made about 25 of these and they’re all my favorite.

.
[details for makers] Brown speckled clay- thrown in a closed form, trimmed into a top and bottom, carved freehand, glazed with ivory glaze. Obviously with a couple trips to the kiln along the way! 📝

I look through old photos and videos of my kids and they’re always wearing something I either made or mended - or both! I don’t make or mend as much of their clothing as I used to, but I remember the version of me who did that work. Whatever I’m making or mending, the over-the-top sentimentality seeps through. Alhamdulilah for that.
.
[details for makers] use what you have! It isn’t a compromise- it’s agency and autonomy and so much more beautiful! 📝

[details for makers] My pottery work is primarily on the wheel (~10 years experience) and making knitted forms (with cotton yarn) that I coat in porcelain (~2 years experience) 📝
