I work in a variety of mediums - perhaps too many! This year, I’m going to do a series explaining why I love each of them, iA. This is the first! 🏺
.
[details for makers] My pottery work is primarily on the wheel (~10 years experience) and making knitted forms (with cotton yarn) that I coat in porcelain (~2 years experience) 📝

✨ creating things with our hands is such a beautiful way to explore our hearts ✨ inshallah, I’ll be selling these bukhoor burners closer to Ramadan. They do also look nice with a tealight! ✨

Artists can be alchemists. ✨ 🧶

[details for makers] cotton yarn- reclaimed, knitted into new forms, coated in porcelain, fired twice- the second time with a clear glaze. The quilted pieces in the background I made following the instructions in @heidi.parkes Framed Quilts class. 📝

Do you sell seconds? I can understand preferring not to, but this is why I do! 🧶

[details for makers] cotton yarn (always harvested from the cotton yarn already in my life - old sweaters, leftovers, etc, etc) Now being knitted into forms, slowly coated in porcelain slip. Fired once then again with a clear glaze. 📝

I don’t know about a work/life balance. But I love my work and I love my life. Alhamdulilah. 🧶

.
[details for makers] most of my creating time is spent on knitting and carving right now. Knitting forms for coating in porcelain later. Carving forms I threw and trimmed on the wheel when it was warmer. My garage pottery studio is freezing! It’s fun to come up with work-arounds! Knitted porcelain pieces are available currently on my website. Carved pieces are a little collection I’m building up for Ramadan 🌙 iA📝

[details for makers] cotton yarn, knit into a vase form, coated in porcelain slip. Through the kiln twice (the second trip being the one that took it down). 📝

There are so many questions on my reel about my process making these knitted porcelain pieces. Trying to answer the most common ones here! One last common one -“You know you can’t use them as vases because they have holes???” Yes! I know! I use them for dry flowers. You’re cute, though. 💐 🧶

I mean this as a love letter to my fellow artists. I’m not accusing anyone of stealing from me nor confessing to any stealing myself. We aren’t all Picasso over here. Just trying to bring some beauty into the world. Love to all those who create artwork with their hands ♥️🧶

Bukhoor jars - I threw a closed form with brown speckled clay, cut it apart, trimmed to make it into a jar +lid, carved, glazed with ivory glaze. These I plan to start selling closer to Ramadan inshallah. 📝

I knitted them during the day and they’re glowing for me at night. ✨ Making knitted porcelain vases and luminaries is my current rabbit hole. 🧶 🌙

It took me a little too long there to realize - it’s easier to blow out these luminaries without picking them up! 🧶

It’s dark this morning in Michigan. I love the dark blue luminaries at night, but the white and lighter ones really shine during the day. ✨ 🧶
.
[details for makers] part of making these is letting go of control. As all potters know, that last firing is make or break - literally - and we have to accept that the final shape is to a certain extent out of our control 📝

The machines can never compete with the artistry passed through generations. 🧶
.
.
[details for makers] Yes, it has to be 100% natural fibers for the yarn. You do not want to burn plastic.

The ironies of trying to go fast when the process is really slow. Well! At least I do love these slow processes! 🧶

[details for makers] My last reel on my knitted porcelain pieces really took off. I’m so grateful for all the sales and interest, if also a little overwhelmed. 😳😳Alhamdulilah. The fastest pieces to sell seem to have been ones with a lower price point and the darker blues, so I’m working on more of those! For real details on this process, my last reel has tons of them!📝
